3rd South-Eastern Europe GEO Workshop

 -

Thessaloniki, Greece

The Workshop

The 3rd South – Eastern Europe GEO Workshop will gather local, regional, European stakeholders under the theme “Uptake of GEO and Copernicus in South – Eastern Europe, North Africa and Middle East”.

The event aims to offer a prime opportunity for key players across the Earth Observation (EO) data value chains (institutions, industry, users) to share their insights and vision on long-term actions that can help maximise the impact of EO and leverage European Union’s investments in this field. The inputs collected within the workshop will feed into the current roadmap for the improved implementation of GEO/GEOSS and the increased uptake of Copernicus in the Balkans, Middle East and North Africa.

Hosted by i-BEC, with the support of National Observatory of Athens,  the workshop is taking place in the framework of the regional events organized by the GEO-CRADLE project.

The Project

A Horizon 2020 funded project, GEO-CRADLE is first and foremost an exciting opportunity to interconnect a regional community of geo-information actors.

The project aims to enable a better utilisation of Earth Observation (EO) data by bringing together a wide range of stakeholders. From academic and research organisations to SME, the project seeks to connect diverse and sometimes contrasting actors, within the data value added chain.

Consortium members include 23 organisations from 16 countries within the Balkans, North Africa and Middle East regions. Together they have joined forces to establish a multi-regional coordination network.

Looking to facilitate access to various types of data, the project set-up an Open Regional Data Hub. Acting as a one-stop-shop for data and open to all, the Hub aims thus to support the development of new geo-based innovative services. The project saw also the creation of a Regional Networking Platform  which brings together local and regional research institutes, public authorities and private companies. An on-going activity, the platform aims to inform registered regional stakeholders on existing capacities, complementary skills and collaboration opportunities.

The GEO Community

GEO is a partnership of more than 100 national governments and in excess of 100 Participating Organizations that envisions a future where decisions and actions for the benefit of humankind are informed by coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations. The unprecedented global collaboration of experts helps identify gaps and reduce duplication in the areas of sustainable development and sound environmental management.

Together, the GEO community is creating a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) to better integrate observing systems and share data by connecting existing infrastructures using common standards. There are more than 400 million open data resources in GEOSS from more than 150 national and regional providers such as NASA and ESA; international organizations such as WMO and the commercial sector such as Digital Globe.
